Ep 1 | Our Story — From Busy to Deeply Rooted
Posted February 10, 2026
We Didn’t Need More Time. We Needed Different Rhythms.
Have you ever reached the end of the day and wondered where the time went?
You tucked the kids into bed, answered the emails, made dinner, folded a load of laundry (or at least thought about folding it), and somehow still felt like you missed what mattered most.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
For a long time, that was our life too.
We loved Jesus. We were raising kids. We were serving at church. We were building careers we cared about. From the outside, it probably looked like we had everything together.
But behind closed doors, we were tired.
Not just physically tired. Emotionally tired.
We were living fast, saying yes to everything, and slowly becoming disconnected from each other without even realizing it.

“We didn’t create this podcast because we figured it all out. We created it because we almost lost what mattered most.”
Busyness Wasn’t the Problem
Looking back, we don’t think our biggest problem was having full schedules.
It was that we never stopped long enough to ask if our schedules reflected what mattered most.
We kept saying yes because they were good opportunities.
We kept serving because we loved people.
We kept working because we wanted to provide for our growing family.
None of those things were bad.
But somewhere along the way, our marriage started feeling more like two people running side by side than two people walking together.
We loved God, but we didn’t yet know how to build a deeply rooted family.
The Turning Point
Just a few years into our marriage, we found ourselves sitting in a marriage counselor’s office.
The counselor had a couch and two chairs.
For nearly two years, we chose the chairs.
Sitting next to each other on the couch felt too close.
Too vulnerable.
That picture says more about that season than words ever could.
We originally went to counseling thinking we needed help in one area of our marriage. Instead, God gently uncovered deeper places that needed healing.
We learned that spiritual growth and emotional maturity aren’t always the same thing.
You can spend time with the Lord every morning and still avoid hard conversations.
You can love Jesus deeply while still carrying wounds that affect your marriage and your family.
Healing began when we stopped running and started letting God do deeper work in our hearts.
Building a Different Kind of Family
As we began healing, we asked ourselves a simple question:
What do we actually want our family to look like?
We pulled out a journal and started writing.
We defined the values we wanted to stand on. We talked about the kind of parents we wanted to become. We dreamed about the legacy we hoped to leave our children.
Then we realized something.
Those values wouldn’t become reality by accident.
Our daily rhythms had to support them.
So we started making changes.
Some were big.
We stepped away from commitments that no longer fit the season God had us in.
Others were surprisingly ordinary.
We created meal planning rhythms.
Laundry rhythms.
Family dinners.
Morning quiet time.
Weekly Sabbath.
None of those things seemed life-changing on their own.
But together, they completely changed the pace of our home.
Deep Roots Don’t Keep Storms Away
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that intentional rhythms don’t prevent hardship.
They prepare you for it.
Since making those changes, we’ve walked through unexpected job losses, cross-country moves, medical emergencies, and one of the hardest seasons of our lives when our daughter Darla spent months in the NICU while our family was separated across Colorado.
Those seasons were incredibly painful.
But they were different than they would have been years earlier.
Our rhythms gave us stability when life felt uncertain.
Our Sabbath reminded us to rest.
Our time with the Lord reminded us where our hope came from.
Simple routines removed unnecessary stress so we could focus on what mattered most.
The storms still came.
Our roots were simply deeper.
You Don’t Need a New Life
Sometimes it feels like the only way to slow down is to quit your job, move to the country, or completely change your lifestyle.
We’ve learned that’s usually not true.
Most families don’t need an entirely new life.
They need different rhythms.
Maybe slowing down starts with saying no to one commitment.
Maybe it looks like eating dinner together one more night each week.
Maybe it’s setting your phone down for thirty minutes so you can truly be present with your family.
Small rhythms have a way of creating big change over time.
One Question to Ask This Week
If you want to take one simple step today, gather your family around the table and ask this question:
“How can we slow down more this year?”
Listen to everyone’s answers.
Pray together.
Start small.
Remember, the goal isn’t perfection.
It’s creating space to notice God, enjoy one another, and build a family that’s deeply rooted in what matters most.

What if the life you’re longing for doesn’t require more time… just different rhythms?
In this first episode of The Rooted Family Podcast, we (Kayla & Christian Cornish) share our story—the honest, behind-the-scenes journey that led us from a busy, disconnected family life to one that is deeply rooted in Christ, aligned in purpose, and sustained by intentional rhythms.
We talk openly about:
- Loving Jesus while still feeling exhausted, rushed, and emotionally disconnected
- Early marriage struggles, counseling, and choosing to stay when it would’ve been easier to drift
- How slowing down, practicing Sabbath, and building daily rhythms transformed our marriage and family
- Walking through real hardship—job loss, moves, medical crises, and long seasons of separation—and how our rhythms carried us through the storms
This episode lays the foundation for everything to come. It’s not about perfection, formulas, or escaping real life—it’s about learning how to slow down, go deeper, and build a family life that can withstand whatever comes your way.
