Ep. 19 |What Is a Rooted Dad? Four Characteristics That Build a Strong Family
What makes a great dad?
Is it working long hours to provide for your family? Coaching your kid’s baseball team? Being home every night for dinner?
Those things all matter. But they aren’t what make a father deeply rooted.
This Father’s Day, we’ve been thinking about a simple truth:
The greatest gift you can give your children isn’t more money, more vacations, or even more opportunities. It’s a father who is deeply rooted.
The Strength You Can’t See
When Christian was growing up, there was a wooded area near his house filled with giant trees.
He spent hours climbing from branch to branch, creating adventures with his friends. Those trees felt strong. Safe. Steady.
Years later, he realized why.
The strength wasn’t in the branches.
It was in the roots.
Everything above the ground depended on what was happening below the surface.
Fatherhood works the same way.
Your children don’t need a dad who looks strong on the outside. They need a dad whose heart is firmly rooted in Christ. A man who is steady when life gets hard. A man who keeps showing up, even when he doesn’t feel like he’s getting it right.
That’s the kind of strength a family can build on.
Most Dads Aren’t Giving Up
One of the biggest ideas we’ve been talking about lately is this:
Most dads aren’t intentionally abandoning their families. They’re slowly drifting away from their potential.
That sentence has stayed with us.
Because the truth is, most fathers love their families deeply.
They want to be patient.
They want to lead well.
They want to raise children who love Jesus.
But life is busy.
Work is demanding.
Phones constantly compete for our attention.
Many dads carry quiet feelings of inadequacy, wondering if they’re doing enough.
Instead of growing into the father they hoped to become, they slowly drift.
Not because they don’t care.
Because life is pulling them in a hundred different directions.
The answer isn’t trying harder.
The answer is growing deeper.
Four Characteristics of a Rooted Dad
As we talked through this together on the podcast, four words kept rising to the surface.
A rooted dad is:
Purposeful
Fatherhood doesn’t happen by accident.
The small choices you make every day shape your family more than you realize.
Reading Scripture before work.
Praying for your children.
Speaking kindly to your wife.
Taking a few extra minutes to coach instead of simply correcting.
These moments may seem small, but they become the roots your family grows from.
Present
Being present is about much more than simply being home.
It’s giving your family your attention.
Your kids don’t need you to entertain them all day.
They need to know they matter.
Sometimes being present is as simple as putting your phone down, making eye contact, and listening to the story they’ve been waiting to tell you.
One of Christian’s favorite reminders is this:
You’ll never regret being present.
We’ve regretted plenty of distractions.
We’ve never regretted choosing our family.
Passionate
This may be the characteristic that surprised us the most.
Many men are passionate about work, hobbies, or sports.
None of those things are wrong.
But what if your family knew—without a doubt—that they were one of your greatest passions?
Children notice where our excitement goes.
Imagine the difference it makes when they know Dad truly enjoys being with them.
Not because he’s perfect.
Because he’s fully engaged.
Pastor
Being the spiritual leader of your home doesn’t mean having all the answers.
It doesn’t require a seminary degree.
It simply means pointing your family toward Jesus.
Pray together.
Read Scripture together.
Talk about God during everyday moments.
Ask for forgiveness when you make mistakes.
Your children will learn just as much from your example as they will from your words.
The Legacy You’re Building
One of the greatest encouragements we’ve discovered over the years is this:
Deeply rooted parents raise deeply rooted children.
Not because they do everything perfectly.
But because children grow best when they see parents who keep growing, too.
We’ve certainly made mistakes.
We’ve had seasons where we’ve felt tired, distracted, and stretched thin.
But we’ve also watched God faithfully deepen our roots through both joyful seasons and difficult ones.
Looking back, we’re beginning to see fruit that wasn’t visible years ago.
That’s how roots work.
Growth happens quietly before anyone notices it.
One Small Step This Week
If you’re a dad reading this, don’t feel like you need to change everything overnight.
Choose one small step.
Maybe you’ll put your phone away during dinner.
Maybe you’ll pray with your kids before bed.
Maybe you’ll take ten uninterrupted minutes to connect with one of your children after work.
Small choices, repeated over time, become a lasting legacy.
And if you’re reading this as a wife, mother, grandparent, or friend, encourage the fathers in your life.
They may be carrying more than you realize.
A few words of encouragement can go a long way.

We talk about family systems, daily routines, spiritual disciplines, marriage, parenting, big faith, and everyday Christian formation—always with real-life application for the modern family.
You’ll learn how to:
- Create simple rhythms and routines that actually work
- Build systems that support faith, peace, and connection at home
- Go deeper spiritually as parents—and help your kids grow in their own faith

How do you become the dad your family actually needs? Most fathers aren’t intentionally abandoning their families. They deeply love their wives and children. But somewhere between work, distractions, exhaustion, and the pressures of everyday life, many dads find themselves drifting away from the father they hoped they would become.
In this Father’s Day episode, we’re talking about what it means to be a Rooted Dad—not a perfect dad or a superhero dad, but a father who is deeply rooted in his faith, intentional in his leadership, and present for the people who matter most.
We explore four characteristics that define a Rooted Dad: being purposeful, present, passionate, and a pastor to your family. Along the way, we discuss the struggles modern fathers face, why so many men feel inadequate, and how small daily choices can shape a family’s legacy for generations.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
• Why many dads slowly drift away from their potential
• The difference between being present and simply being around
• How healthy passion impacts your marriage and children
• What it means to pastor your home without having all the answers
• Practical ways to become more intentional in your fatherhood this week
If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re becoming the father God is calling you to be, this conversation is for you.
