Ep. 18 | 3 Summer Rhythms That Matter More Than a Bucket List
Every summer starts with the best intentions.
We make a bucket list. We plan camping trips, vacations, splash pads, ice cream dates, and backyard adventures. We want our kids to have a summer they’ll never forget.
But somewhere between the plans and the pressure, it’s easy to believe that creating a meaningful summer depends on doing more.
What if it doesn’t?
What if the moments that shape your family most aren’t the big trips, special outings, or activities on the calendar—but the ordinary moments in between?
After raising seven kids, we’ve learned something we didn’t expect. The camping trips are wonderful. The zoo days are worth it. The family vacations become treasured memories. But those moments make up only a small part of summer.
The rest of summer is lived at home.
It’s lunch around the table. It’s slow evenings on the porch. It’s kids running through the backyard. It’s conversations that happen when no one is rushing to the next thing.
Those ordinary moments are where family culture is built.
A Bucket List Creates Moments. Rhythms Create Culture.
We’re big fans of summer bucket lists. In fact, we think every family should make one.
But we’ve also discovered that meaningful summers aren’t built on special events alone. They’re built through simple rhythms that create peace, connection, and room to enjoy everyday life.
When your home has healthy rhythms, the special moments become even sweeter because they grow out of a peaceful foundation instead of a hurried one.
Instead of asking, “What fun things should we do this summer?” try asking, “What kind of atmosphere do we want to create in our home?”
That simple question changes everything.
Start with the Everyday
One rhythm that has made a surprising difference for our family is something incredibly ordinary: lunch.
If you’ve ever had several kids asking what’s for lunch before ten o’clock in the morning, you know how quickly decision fatigue can set in.
Having a simple lunch plan removes one more daily decision and brings a sense of calm to the middle of the day. It doesn’t have to be fancy. A weekly rotation of favorite meals is often enough.
And don’t stop with the food.
Read a chapter from a favorite book together. Eat outside on a blanket. End lunch with popsicles on a warm afternoon.
Those little traditions become the memories your children carry with them long after they forget what was actually on their plates.
If you’re looking for a simple place to start, we’ve created a free Summer Lunch Meal Plan Guide to help you build this rhythm in your own home. You’ll find the link in the show notes.
Make Space for Rest
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children—and ourselves—is permission to slow down.
Our family has practiced a daily quiet time for years. It isn’t about punishment or forcing naps. It’s about creating space to rest, read, imagine, and simply be.
At first, kids may tell you they’re bored.
But boredom isn’t something to fear.
Given enough time, boredom often becomes creativity.
Some of our favorite memories have come after the complaints faded and imaginations took over. Forts were built. Games were invented. Stories were written. Friendships between siblings grew stronger.
Rest isn’t just something we visit on vacation. It’s something we can practice every day.
Create Rhythms That Bring You Together
Connection rarely happens by accident.
It happens because we make room for it.
For our family, that might look like fishing one evening each week, taking a walk after dinner, reading the Bible together on the porch, or playing a quick game before bed.
None of those activities are expensive.
None of them are elaborate.
But done consistently, they become part of your family’s story.
Children don’t remember every vacation itinerary. They remember the things that happened again and again.
They remember pancakes on Saturday mornings. Evening walks. Popsicles after lunch. Family game nights.
Consistency shapes memories more than intensity.
Don’t Try to Do Everything
If you’re feeling inspired, resist the temptation to overhaul your entire summer.
Choose one rhythm.
Just one.
Maybe it’s planning lunches each week. Maybe it’s a daily quiet hour. Maybe it’s a family walk after dinner.
Small rhythms practiced consistently have a way of growing into something much bigger over time.
The goal isn’t a perfect summer.
It’s a peaceful one.
So make the bucket list.
Plan the camping trip.
Watch the fireworks.
Take the vacation.
But remember that the atmosphere of your home will shape your family long after those special days are over.
Because while a bucket list creates moments, rhythms create the kind of family those moments happen in.
