Ep 4 | Dream Team Marriage: Why Healthy Marriages Start with Thinking Like a Team
There’s a phrase we hear all the time:
“Marriage is hard.”
And while there’s truth in that, we’ve started wondering if what people really mean is this:
Marriage is hard when two people stop functioning like a team.
Life has a way of pulling couples in different directions. There are meals to make, bills to pay, kids to raise, calendars to manage, and endless decisions to make. Before long, it can feel like you’re simply surviving the same life instead of building it together.
We know that feeling because we’ve been there.
In the early years of our marriage, we loved each other deeply. That was never the problem. But loving each other and working together weren’t the same thing.
One of our biggest disagreements was about money. We came into marriage with completely different backgrounds and different ideas about finances. We remember one simple conversation about putting gas on a credit card. To one of us, it seemed like a smart way to earn rewards. To the other, it represented something we had already decided to leave behind.
The argument wasn’t really about the gas.
It was about two people thinking from two different playbooks.
Over time, we realized something that changed our marriage:
God didn’t design marriage to be two individuals living under the same roof. He designed it to be a partnership.
From Roommates to Teammates
Jesus said in John 10:10 that He came so we could have life—and have it abundantly.
We believe that promise includes our marriages.
Yet many couples aren’t experiencing abundant life together. They’re exhausted. They’re disconnected. They love each other, but somewhere along the way they’ve slipped into what feels more like “roommate mode.”
The conversations become mostly about logistics.
Who’s picking up the kids?
What’s for dinner?
Did you pay that bill?
Those things matter, but they were never meant to be the foundation of a marriage.
Marriage was created to reflect the love of Christ. It was designed for unity, joy, and partnership.
Your Kids Are Watching
One of the reasons we’ve become so passionate about healthy marriages is because of our children.
Whether we realize it or not, our kids are learning what marriage looks like by watching ours.
They notice how we speak to each other.
They notice how we handle disagreements.
They notice whether we’re for each other or against each other.
A healthy marriage doesn’t require perfect parents.
It creates something even more valuable: safety.
When children grow up in a home where mom and dad are working together, honoring one another, and repairing conflict well, they experience security that shapes them for years to come.
That’s worth fighting for.
Become a Student of Your Spouse
One of the biggest shifts in our marriage happened when we stopped trying to win arguments and started trying to understand each other.
Instead of assuming we already knew everything about one another, we became students of each other.
We learned each other’s strengths.
We learned how the other person thinks.
We learned what matters most.
Today, after years of walking together, there are so many moments where one of us can almost predict how the other would respond. Not because we can read minds, but because we’ve taken the time to know each other’s hearts.
That kind of unity isn’t built overnight.
It’s built through thousands of small conversations.
Assume the Best
One lesson that has transformed our marriage is learning to assume positive intent.
It’s easy to tell ourselves stories.
“He forgot because he doesn’t care.”
“She’s upset because she’s disappointed in me.”
“He was late because work is more important than family.”
Most of the time, those stories simply aren’t true.
When we choose to believe the best about one another, our conversations change.
Our tone changes.
Our hearts soften.
One of our favorite reminders is this:
If you’re going to make up a story about your spouse, make it a good one.
That simple mindset has prevented countless unnecessary conflicts in our home.
One Question That Changes Everything
If you’re wondering where to start, don’t overcomplicate it.
Ask your spouse one simple question:
“How can I serve you today?”
It’s amazing how quickly marriage changes when both people stop asking, “What am I getting?” and start asking, “How can I help?”
Small acts of service build trust.
Trust builds unity.
And unity creates the kind of marriage that both you and your children get to enjoy.
Keep Fighting for Your Marriage
If your marriage feels difficult right now, we want you to know something:
There is hope.
We aren’t sharing these ideas because we’ve mastered marriage. We’re sharing them because we’ve spent years learning, growing, apologizing, seeking wise counsel, and fighting for the relationship God has given us.
Healthy marriages aren’t built by accident.
They’re built one conversation, one choice, and one act of love at a time.

Marriage was never meant to feel like two people simply managing life side-by-side. God designed marriage for unity, joy, and deep partnership.
But over time, many couples slowly drift into “roommate mode.” The love may still be there — but the teamwork is missing.
In this episode, Kayla and Christian begin a two-part conversation about how to build a dream team marriage.
Drawing from their own journey through hard seasons, counseling, and years of intentionally strengthening their relationship, they share the first key that transformed their marriage: learning how to think like a team.
If you desire more unity, trust, and alignment in your marriage, this episode will encourage you and give you a simple place to start.
In this episode, we talk about:
• Why many marriages slowly drift into “roommate mode”
• How learning to think like a team changes the atmosphere of a home
• The importance of becoming a student of your spouse
• Why assuming positive intent can transform conflict
• One simple daily question that strengthens teamwork in marriage
This is Part 1 of a two-part conversation.
Next week, we’ll continue with Part 2 where we talk about how to strategize like a team and play like a team through practical rhythms, shared boundaries, and weekly check-ins.
If this episode encourages you, consider sharing it with your spouse or another couple who could use the encouragement.
