Ep 5 | Dream Team Marriage: The Simple Strategies That Help Us Stay on the Same Team
New here?
Start with part one: Dream Team Marriage: Why Healthy Marriages Start with Thinking Like a Team before diving into today’s practical strategies.
Have you ever felt like you and your spouse were pulling in opposite directions?
Maybe it was over money. A parenting decision. A busy calendar. Or maybe it was something as simple as whose turn it was to take out the trash.
Sometimes it doesn’t feel like you’re on the same team at all.
We’ve been there.
A few years ago, we started talking about buying our first home. We met with a realtor, talked with a loan officer, and even got pre-approved for a mortgage. In my mind (Kayla), everything was moving forward exactly as planned.
Then we toured a house that I absolutely loved.
It wasn’t perfect, but I didn’t care. I could already picture our family living there.
I assumed we’d put in an offer that day.
Instead, Christian hesitated.
At first, I couldn’t understand why. I thought we had been walking toward this decision together. Why was he suddenly changing his mind?
If I’m honest, I started believing a lie.
I assumed he wasn’t for me.
I thought he was standing in the way of a dream that we had shared.
Looking back, I realize I never stopped to ask what was happening in his heart. Instead of getting curious, I got frustrated.
Eventually, Christian opened up.
He had been praying. He was asking God for wisdom about our finances and whether it was truly the right time to buy a home. As the provider for our family, he wasn’t trying to crush my dream. He was trying to faithfully lead our family.
That changed everything.
The problem wasn’t that we were on different teams.
The problem was that we had stopped communicating like teammates.
Great Marriages Don’t Just Happen
One thing we’ve learned over the years is that healthy marriages rarely happen by accident.
They are built one small choice at a time.
Just like a great sports team doesn’t show up on game day without practice or a game plan, marriages need intentionality too.
We often say there are three keys to building a dream team marriage:
Think like a team.
Strategize like a team.
Play like a team.
In our previous podcast episode, we talked about the first key: thinking like a team.
This time, we want to focus on the next two.
Every Marriage Needs a Strategy
No two families are exactly alike.
Your personalities, schedules, jobs, children, and responsibilities are unique. That means your marriage needs a strategy that works for your family—not someone else’s.
Some of the simplest strategies have made the biggest difference in our home.
We share a calendar.
We protect weekly rhythms.
We have regular check-ins where we talk about what’s coming up, what’s been hard, and how we can support each other.
None of those things are flashy.
But together, they have brought so much peace into our marriage.
Without a strategy, life starts to feel chaotic.
With a strategy, you’re able to move through the week together instead of constantly reacting to it.
Shared Boundaries Build Trust
Another thing that has helped us is creating shared boundaries.
For us, that includes how we spend our money, how we protect our Sabbath, and even how we make decisions before adding commitments to our calendar.
These aren’t rules meant to limit us.
They’re guardrails that help us stay aligned.
When both spouses know what matters most, there’s less confusion and fewer opportunities for resentment to grow.
Stop Keeping Score
One of the easiest traps to fall into in marriage is keeping score.
Who changed more diapers?
Who cooked dinner more often?
Who worked harder this week?
The problem is that scorekeeping turns teammates into competitors.
We’ve learned to ask a different question:
“What’s best for our team?”
Sometimes one of us carries a little more because the other person is in a demanding season.
Sometimes the roles change completely.
What matters isn’t that everything is perfectly equal.
What matters is that we’re working toward the same goal.
Own Your Role—and Stay Humble
Being a great teammate doesn’t mean you’ll never make mistakes.
It means you’re willing to own them.
If one of us forgets a responsibility or drops the ball, we try to respond with humility instead of defensiveness.
“I’m sorry.”
“I’ll do better.”
Those four words have protected our marriage more times than we can count.
At the same time, we’ve learned that honesty matters too.
A healthy marriage isn’t built on passive silence.
It’s built on loving conversations where both people feel safe enough to speak the truth with kindness.
Clear really is kind.
Jesus Is the Head Coach
All of these strategies matter.
Shared calendars.
Weekly check-ins.
Shared boundaries.
Healthy communication.
But none of them are the foundation.
Jesus is.
We’ve discovered that we simply cannot manufacture lasting unity on our own.
Time and time again, we’ve had to bring our disagreements, dreams, fears, and plans before the Lord and ask Him to lead us.
When Jesus is at the center of a marriage, He has a way of softening hearts, restoring perspective, and reminding us that we’re fighting for each other—not against each other.
That’s the kind of marriage we want.
Not a perfect marriage.
A deeply rooted one.
One where two imperfect people keep choosing to love, communicate, forgive, and follow Jesus together.
