Bonus Ep. | Our Bedtime Rhythm Stopped Working (Listen In as We Work Through It)
Have you ever had a family rhythm that worked really wellโฆ until one day it didn’t?
Maybe it’s bedtime. Maybe it’s mornings before school. Maybe it’s dinner, getting out the door, or finding time to connect with your spouse.
Whatever it is, the frustration can make you wonder if you should just throw the whole routine out and start over.
We’ve been there.
Not long ago, our summer bedtime rhythm suddenly stopped working. During the school year, everything ran smoothly. But as soon as summer arrived, with longer days, later sunsets, and kids who weren’t quite as tired, our peaceful evenings quickly turned into chaos.
It felt like we were playing an endless game of whack-a-mole.
We’d tuck one child into bed, turn around to help another, and suddenly the first one was back out of bed again. By the end of the night, everyone was exhausted, including us.
At first, it was tempting to think our bedtime routine had simply stopped working.
But after sitting down together and talking it through, we realized something important.
Every Rhythm Has a Season
One of the biggest mistakes we can make is assuming that if a rhythm isn’t working anymore, we’ve failed.
That’s simply not true.
Families change.
Children grow.
Schedules shift.
The seasons of life God gives us are always changing, and healthy family rhythms should change too.
A rhythm that brought peace last year may need a few thoughtful adjustments this year.
That’s not failure.
That’s family life.
Don’t Ignore the Frustration
One idea has stayed with us ever since we recorded this conversation:
Don’t ignore your frustration. Get curious about it.
Instead of seeing frustration as something to avoid, what if we saw it as an invitation?
Think of frustration like smoke.
Smoke isn’t the problemโit’s simply letting you know there’s something worth paying attention to.
The same is true in family life.
If bedtime feels stressful every nightโฆ
If mornings always end in tearsโฆ
If dinner feels rushedโฆ
Instead of asking, “Why does this keep happening?” try asking a different question:
“Is there a rhythm that needs adjusting?”
That small shift changes everything.
Better Questions Lead to Better Rhythms
As Christian and I talked through our bedtime rhythm, we realized we didn’t need a completely different routine.
We needed better questions.
Questions like:
- What do we want bedtime to feel like?
- What’s no longer working?
- What’s helping?
- What’s missing?
- What’s one small adjustment we could try this week?
Those questions led us to several simple ideas.
Maybe we needed to start bedtime a little earlier.
Maybe we needed to read together again.
Maybe bringing everyone together for family prayer would create a better “closing moment” to the day.
None of these changes were dramatic.
But together, they had the potential to bring more peace to our evenings.
Small Adjustments Matter
It’s easy to believe meaningful change requires a complete overhaul.
But we’ve found the opposite is often true.
Some of the biggest breakthroughs in our home have come from one thoughtful adjustment.
One new question.
One conversation.
One small rhythm practiced consistently.
That’s encouraging because it means you don’t have to fix everything this week.
You can simply choose one area that’s been feeling harder than it should and begin there.
A Challenge for Your Family
Before you start another routine or download another planner, pause for a moment.
Think about one recurring frustration in your home.
Then sit down with your spouse and ask:
What do we want this area of our family life to feel like?
What’s no longer working?
What’s one small adjustment we could make?
You may discover that your family doesn’t need a brand-new system.
It may simply need a rhythm that’s been lovingly refined for the season you’re in today.
If this idea resonates with you, we’d love for you to listen to the full conversation on The Rooted Family Podcast. In this bonus episode, we invite you into our real-life discussion about bedtime, the questions we asked each other, and the small changes we’re making in hopes of building a more peaceful home.
Because one of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is this:
A rhythm that worked last season may not work in this season. And that’s not failureโthat’s family life.

Have you ever had a family rhythm that worked really well… until it suddenly didn’t?
Maybe bedtime has become a battle. Maybe mornings feel rushed. Maybe dinner is more stressful than peaceful. As your family grows and seasons change, it’s normal for the rhythms that once served you well to need a few thoughtful adjustments. The challenge is knowing what to change, and what to keep.
Instead of giving you another list of parenting tips, we’re inviting you into a real conversation from our own home. You’ll hear us work through one of our family’s biggest current frustrations: our summer bedtime rhythm, and ask the same questions we use whenever a rhythm stops creating the peace and freedom we hoped it would. Our prayer is that you’ll walk away with a practical framework you can use to evaluate your own family rhythms and make one small adjustment that brings more peace to your home.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
- How to recognize when a rhythm needs refining instead of replacing
- The questions we ask when a family rhythm stops working
- A behind-the-scenes look at how we’re adjusting our summer bedtime routine
- Why small adjustments often create the biggest breakthroughs
- A simple framework to help you troubleshoot rhythms with your spouse
If you’ve been feeling frustrated by an area of family life that seems harder than it should, pull up a chair and join the conversation. We hope it encourages you to start with one thoughtful adjustment instead of a complete overhaul.
