Ep. 21 | Why Family Rhythms Create More Freedom
When people find out we have seven kids, run multiple businesses, host a podcast, and still make time for family dinners and pickleball, they usually ask the same question:
“How do you do it all?
Honestly, we understand why they’re asking.
From the outside, our life probably looks busy. And in many ways, it is.
But here’s what we’ve discovered over the years: we don’t spend our days making the same decisions over and over again.
Instead, we’ve built rhythms.
That one change has created more freedom than almost anything else we’ve done.
Freedom Isn’t What We Usually Think
When we hear the word freedom, we often picture a calendar with nothing on it.
No responsibilities.
No deadlines.
No commitments.
But that’s not real life for most families.
Laundry still needs to be folded.
Dinner still needs to be made.
Kids still need rides, encouragement, and bedtime stories.
Those responsibilities don’t disappear because we wish they would.
The question isn’t whether those things will happen.
The question is whether we’ll approach them intentionally or react to them every single day.
We’ve found that freedom isn’t found in having fewer responsibilities. It’s found in having rhythms that support the life you want to live.
The Hidden Cost of Decision Fatigue
One of the biggest reasons families feel exhausted isn’t because they’re doing too much.
It’s because they’re making too many decisions.
Think about dinner.
If every afternoon you have to decide what to cook, search the pantry, make a grocery list, and figure out where everyone is eating, you’re using a tremendous amount of mental energy before you even start cooking.
Now multiply that by every part of family life.
Laundry.
Cleaning.
Bedtime.
Morning routines.
School lunches.
Schedules.
It’s no wonder so many parents end the day feeling completely drained.
Every unnecessary decision quietly steals a little bit of your energy.
Rhythms give that energy back.
Rhythms Create Margin
One of the biggest surprises we’ve experienced is that rhythms don’t make life feel more restrictive.
They actually create more space.
When meals are planned, we have more margin for conversation around the dinner table.
When the house has simple cleaning rhythms, we spend less time catching up on weekends.
When our mornings have a predictable flow, everyone starts the day with a little more peace.
Those small rhythms don’t just save time.
They protect our attention.
Instead of wondering what needs to happen next, we can focus on the people standing right in front of us.
That kind of presence is one of the greatest gifts we can give our families.
The Rhythms That Matter Most
Not every rhythm has to be complicated.
In fact, the most meaningful ones are often the simplest.
Reading your Bible before checking your phone.
Planning meals one day a week.
Having dinner together.
Taking a walk after supper.
Protecting a weekly Sabbath.
Scheduling regular time with your spouse.
None of those things are flashy.
They’re simply small decisions repeated with consistency.
Over time, those ordinary rhythms shape extraordinary families.
Start Small
Sometimes people hear conversations like this and immediately think they need to overhaul their entire life.
Please don’t.
That’s not the goal.
Instead, ask yourself one simple question:
What area of my life feels harder than it should?
Maybe it’s mornings.
Maybe it’s dinner.
Maybe it’s laundry.
Maybe it’s finding time with your spouse.
Maybe it’s spending time with the Lord.
Choose one area.
Then ask:
What do I want this to feel like?
What’s making it difficult right now?
What’s one simple rhythm that could make it easier?
You don’t need ten new routines.
You probably need one thoughtful rhythm.
Freedom Is Built One Rhythm at a Time
We know building rhythms takes intention.
Some weeks you’ll stick with them.
Other weeks you’ll forget.
That’s okay.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is creating a home where your time, energy, and attention are increasingly aligned with what matters most.
God has entrusted each of us with people to love and responsibilities to steward well. Healthy rhythms aren’t about controlling lifeโthey’re about creating space to faithfully care for both.
If you’ve been feeling stretched thin or caught in survival mode, we’d love to invite you to listen to this episode of The Rooted Family Podcast. We share practical examples from our own home, talk about the hidden cost of decision fatigue, and explore how simple family rhythms can create more peace, more margin, and more freedom in everyday life.
Because at the end of the day, freedom isn’t found in having less to do.
It’s found in building rhythms that support the life God has called you to live.

Does your family ever feel like you’re making the same decisions over and over again?
If your home feels more reactive than intentional, you may not need more timeโyou may simply need better rhythms. The hidden cost of constant decision-making is that it steals your energy, your peace, and your capacity to be fully present with the people you love most.
In this conversation, you’ll discover why intentional family rhythms create freedom instead of restriction. Rather than adding more to your plate, the right rhythms reduce unnecessary decisions, create more margin, and help you build a home that feels calmer, more purposeful, and more connected. If you’ve ever wondered why some seasons feel like survival mode while others feel peaceful, this episode will give you a practical framework for creating rhythms that support the life you want to live.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
- How rhythms create freedom instead of restriction
- How decision fatigue quietly drains your energy and peace
- The connection between simple routines and a more peaceful home
- Why consistency creates more margin for what matters most
- One practical question to help you identify where a new rhythm could make the biggest difference
If you’re longing for a home that feels less rushed and more rooted, we hope this conversation encourages you to start with one simple rhythm.
