Ep. 13 | When God Asks You to Let Go of Something Good

Sometimes the hardest decisions aren’t choosing between something good and something bad.
Sometimes they’re choosing between something good… and something you believe God is calling you toward.
Those decisions are rarely easy.
In fact, they often leave you wondering, How do I know if this is really God?
If you’ve ever wrestled with a big decision, you’re not alone. We’ve been there too.
A few years ago, our family was living in Asheville, North Carolina. It was everything we had hoped for. We had finally purchased our first home after more than ten years of marriage. Our children were thriving in a wonderful Christian school. We had deep friendships, a church family we loved, and a community that felt like home.
We weren’t looking for a change.
We were putting down roots.
Then life changed.
Christian unexpectedly lost his job.
At first, we assumed another opportunity would open nearby. He applied for job after job across western North Carolina. Weeks turned into months, and nothing came together. As our savings slowly disappeared, we began asking a difficult question:
“Lord… what are You doing?”
We didn’t want to leave Asheville.
But eventually we had to become open to wherever God might lead.

Sometimes God Opens a Door You Never Expected

One evening, we were watching Building Roots, a show set in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
Almost jokingly, we looked at each other and wondered what jobs might be available there.
There was exactly one position that matched Christian’s experience.
He applied.
The very next day, the company called.
After months of closed doors, one door suddenly opened wide.
Even then, we didn’t assume that meant we should move. We prayed. We spent time in God’s Word. We sat in silence. We invited trusted friends to pray with us and speak honestly into our lives.
Little by little, God gave us peace.
Not because the decision became easier.
Because He made the direction clearer.

Peace Doesn’t Mean Easy

One of the biggest lessons we learned is that peace and fear can exist at the same time.
We were scared.
We were heartbroken about leaving friends we loved.
Selling the home we had waited years to buy felt almost impossible.
Packing up six children and moving 2,000 miles away sounded overwhelming.
But underneath all of those emotions was a quiet peace that we couldn’t explain.
It wasn’t excitement.
It wasn’t certainty about every detail.
It was simply knowing that if we said no, it wouldn’t be because the opportunity was wrong.
It would be because we were afraid.
That question changed everything.
Are you saying no because it’s not right… or because you’re afraid?

Looking Back Changed How We Saw Everything

As we prayed through that season, we noticed something we had never really put into words before.
This wasn’t the first time God had asked us to trust Him.
Years earlier, God led Kayla away from her career as a registered dietitian to build a business that eventually flourished beyond anything we imagined.
Later, He asked her to lay that successful business down to begin Legacy Roots Co.
Before Asheville, He had called us to leave Wisconsin, where our family, friends, and church had become home.
Each season required another “yes.”
Looking back, we realized God had been growing our faith all along.
Each step of obedience prepared us for the next one.
Colorado wasn’t our first yes.
It was simply our hardest one.

God Goes With You

Today, we can see God’s fingerprints everywhere.
Our home sold in less than twenty-four hours.
He provided a beautiful place for our family in Colorado through a series of unexpected connections.
Our children have flourished here.
And perhaps most amazingly, God placed us here before we even knew our daughter Darla would need specialized medical care available just a few hours away.
Looking back, we see what we couldn’t see then.
God wasn’t asking us to trust Him because He wanted to make life harder.
He was leading us somewhere His provision was already waiting.

If You’re Facing a Big Decision

Maybe you’re standing at your own crossroads today.
Maybe it has nothing to do with moving across the country.
Maybe it’s a new job.
A conversation you’ve been avoiding.
A ministry opportunity.
A relationship.
Or simply the next faithful step God is asking you to take.
If that’s you, here are a few things that helped us:
Spend quiet time with God before making a decision.
Write down what you’re praying through.
Invite wise, trusted believers to speak into your life.
Pay attention to where God is opening and closing doors.
Ask yourself honestly: Am I resisting because it’s wrong… or because I’m afraid?
You don’t have to have the whole picture before you take the next step.
Often, God gives clarity after we choose obedience.
And that’s exactly what we experienced.
We thought Asheville was the dream.
But God had something we never could have imagined.
