Ep. 27 | How to Begin Building Your Family Roots: The Values That Shape Your Home
Before You Build Better Rhythms, Build Better Roots
Have you ever felt like your family is doing all the “right” things, but something still feels off?
Maybe you’ve tried a new morning routine. A better planner. Meal planning. Family meetings. Bedtime routines. You organize the calendar, color-code the schedule, and hope this will finally be the thing that brings peace to your home.
Those rhythms can absolutely help. We use many of them ourselves.
But over the years, we’ve learned something that completely changed the way we lead our family:
Your rhythms will only be as strong as the roots they’re growing from.
Before you decide what your family does, you need to decide who your family is becoming in Christ.
Your Schedule Is Already Telling a Story
If someone followed your family around for a week—but couldn’t hear a single conversation—what would they think mattered most?
Would they notice that you love being together?
Would they see a family that prioritizes time with God?
Would they assume sports come first? Work? Achievement? Rest?
Whether we realize it or not, our calendars tell a story.
Eventually, what we value becomes visible.
Our schedules reveal what we’re building our lives around.
That realization was both encouraging and convicting for us.
Because for years, we weren’t asking the right question.
We kept asking:
“How can we become more organized?”
“How can we be more productive?”
“How can we fit everything in?”
Those aren’t bad questions.
They’re just not the first questions.
The better question is:
Who has God called our family to become?
Every Family Has Roots
When we talk about “roots,” we’re talking about the deeply held values and convictions that anchor your family.
They’re the things that shape your decisions long before you ever open your calendar.
We believe every family already has roots.
Many families have simply never stopped long enough to name them.
For us, discovering our family roots became one of the most important conversations we’ve ever had. It gave us language for who we believed God had created our family to be.
Once we knew our roots, something surprising happened.
Making decisions became much easier.
Roots Become Filters
A few years ago, we found ourselves sitting in a coffee shop in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, praying about whether God was leading us to move our family across the country.
It was a huge decision.
There were plenty of reasons to stay where we were.
We had a home we loved. Our kids were in a wonderful school. Our life felt familiar and comfortable.
Instead of making a pros and cons list, we asked a different question:
Would this move help us live out our family roots?
One by one, we walked through them.
Would this help us put God First?
Would it allow us to prioritize Family Always?
Would it create more opportunities for Adventure?
Would it challenge us to be Forever Learners?
Would it help us Serve others?
Would it keep us in places where we could Inspire and be inspired?
The answer surprised us.
Every single one pointed us toward Colorado.
Our roots became the filter that brought clarity when our emotions couldn’t.
Rhythms Are Simply Roots in Action
Here’s something we wish someone had told us years ago.
You don’t need rhythms just because someone else has them.
You need rhythms that help your family live out your roots.
That’s why our Sabbath rhythm matters so much to us.
It’s how we intentionally put God first.
Family dinners aren’t just about eating together.
They’re one way we live out “Family Always.”
Reading books together supports our desire to be forever learners.
Family adventures remind us to enjoy the world God created.
The rhythm isn’t the goal.
The root is.
The rhythm simply helps you live it out.
Start With One Conversation
You don’t need to figure out your entire family vision this week.
You don’t need a retreat or a perfectly written mission statement.
You just need to begin the conversation.
Sit down with your spouse after the kids go to bed or over an early morning cup of coffee and ask:
When our kids are grown, what do we hope they say our family was all about?
Take your time.
Pray together.
Dream together.
Write down the words that keep coming up.
You may be surprised by what God begins to reveal.
Build From the Inside Out
Our world constantly tells us to do more, optimize more, and become more efficient.
Jesus invites us to something different.
He invites us to become.
When your family is rooted in Christ, your decisions become clearer. Your rhythms become more meaningful. Your home becomes more aligned with the life God is calling you to live.
Storms will still come.
Busy seasons will still come.
Unexpected hardships will still come.
But roots don’t just help a tree grow.
They help it stand.
If you’d like to go deeper into discovering your family’s roots and learning how to build rhythms that reflect them, we’d love for you to listen to the full episode of The Rooted Family Podcast. What if the reason your family’s rhythms aren’t working isn’t because you need a better schedule, but because you haven’t first decided who God is calling your family to become? Discover why your roots shape everything from your daily routines to your biggest decisions, and learn how to build a family that’s deeply rooted for generations to come.
Before you can build healthy family rhythms, you need something even more important.
If you’ve ever felt like your family is constantly tweaking routines, reorganizing the calendar, or searching for the “perfect” schedule—but still feels rushed or out of alignment—you may be trying to solve the wrong problem.
Lasting change doesn’t begin with better time management. It begins with knowing who God has called your family to become.
In this foundational conversation, we’re introducing one of the core ideas behind everything we teach at Legacy Roots Co. and here on The Rooted Family Podcast: your roots determine your rhythms. When you’re clear on what your family is truly about, your decisions become easier, your priorities become clearer, and your daily rhythms begin to reflect the life you actually want to build.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
- Why your schedule reveals what your family truly values
- The difference between family values and what we call “family roots”
- How our family roots guided one of the biggest decisions we’ve ever made
- Why rhythms only work when they’re built on a deeper foundation
- Two simple questions to help you begin discovering your own family’s roots
If you’ve been longing for a more intentional, peaceful, and Christ-centered family life, this conversation is the perfect place to start.
