Ep. 29 | Why Your Mornings Feel So Chaotic (And How to Create a Better Morning Rhythm)
Have you ever started the school morning already feeling behind?
Someone can’t find a shoe. A backpack is missing. One child is still getting dressed. Another suddenly remembers they need to bring something to school. And somehow, the baby needs a diaper change at the exact moment you’re supposed to walk out the door.
We’ve had plenty of mornings like this.
The problem is that a rushed morning rarely stays at the front door. When we begin the day stressed, hurried, and making a hundred little decisions, that feeling can follow us into the rest of the day.
Over the years, we’ve learned that a peaceful morning doesn’t usually happen by accident. It comes from having an intentional morning rhythm.
Your Morning Sets the Tone
We can’t control everything that will happen during the day. A child might wake up sick. The weather might change. The car might not cooperate. Someone might have a hard morning.
But we can take ownership of what we can control.
When we rush out the door, we tend to be more reactive. We’re more likely to snap, feel overwhelmed, or carry that hurried feeling into work, school, and the rest of our responsibilities.
Think about what happens when you exercise at a very high heart rate. You don’t finish the workout and immediately feel calm and ready to sit down and have a thoughtful conversation. You need a moment to breathe and recover.
We’ve found that mornings can work the same way.
We can’t control what kind of day we’re going to have, but we can choose how we’re going to begin it.
Don’t Build a Morning Around Productivity
It’s easy to think of a morning routine as a productivity tool. Get up. Get dressed. Get breakfast. Get everyone out the door as quickly as possible.
But that’s not really why we care about rhythms.
We care about rhythms because they help us create space for what matters most.
Years ago, Kayla realized she was craving more family time in the morning. We were already having family dinners, but she wanted a few minutes where everyone could sit down together, look each other in the eye, and begin the day as a family.
The problem? We didn’t have time.
Or at least, we didn’t think we did.
We didn’t magically find more time for family breakfast. We created a morning rhythm that made family breakfast possible.
That meant deciding what mattered most and then building the rest of the morning around it.
For our family, breakfast became one of those “big rocks.” It doesn’t need to be fancy. Most mornings, we follow a simple breakfast plan so we’re not deciding what everyone will eat at 7:00 in the morning.
The goal isn’t to fit more into your morning. It’s to make room for what really matters most.
Decide Once So You Don’t Have to Decide Every Morning
One of the biggest benefits of a family morning rhythm is reducing decision fatigue.
Think about how many decisions happen before 8 a.m.:
What are we eating? What are we wearing? Where are the backpacks? Who needs to shower? Who needs help getting dressed? When are we leaving? What needs to be packed?
That’s a lot of decisions before you’ve even started the day.
A rhythm allows you to make many of those decisions ahead of time.
It’s like driving the same route to work every day. You don’t want to wake up each morning and figure out a completely new route to the office. Once you know the way, you can simply follow it.
Your morning rhythm can work the same way.
Work Backward From What Matters
One of the most practical things we’ve learned is to work backward.
If you need to leave at 8:00, start there. Maybe you want ten minutes to get shoes and backpacks together, twenty minutes for breakfast, and some buffer time for the unexpected.
Then work backward until you know when everyone needs to wake up.
And give your important moments a timestamp.
For our family, family breakfast had a specific time. If we weren’t sitting down at the table by 7:10, we knew we were behind.
That timestamp wasn’t someone holding a hammer over us. It was simply an agreement we’d made because we knew what we wanted our mornings to feel like.
And when we consistently missed the timestamp, we didn’t throw out the whole rhythm. We asked, “What needs to change so this can work?”
Maybe clothes need to be laid out the night before. Maybe lunches need to be prepared earlier. Maybe you need ten more minutes of margin.
When a rhythm stops serving your family, you don’t have to abandon it. You can refine it.
Make Space for What Matters Most
For us, that also means making space for faith.
A morning rhythm can create a beautiful opportunity to center your family on Christ before the rest of the world begins speaking into your children’s lives.
For our family, that might be a short devotional, prayer, or a Bible verse we say together before everyone leaves.
It doesn’t have to be a 20-minute family church service. Sometimes five minutes is enough.
The important thing is creating space for it to happen.
And if your mornings are currently chaotic, don’t try to change everything at once.
Choose one small thing.
Prepare the backpacks tonight. Choose tomorrow’s breakfast ahead of time. Get up ten minutes earlier. Set a departure time. Pray together for five minutes.
Get that one change on autopilot.
Then make the next tweak.
You don’t need a perfect morning. You need a rhythm that gives your family the best chance to begin the day as the kind of family you want to be.
You can’t control what tomorrow will bring. But you can choose how you begin it.
And that small choice can change more than your morning—it can change the way your family enters the whole day.
