Ep 11 | The Invisible Stress Parents Carry (and How to Actually Break Free)
I always thought I was a calm person.
If you asked me how I was doing, I probably would have told you I was doing just fine. Sure, life was busy. We have seven kids, a business, a home to care for, and all the responsibilities that come with this season of life. But I genuinely believed I was handling it well.
Then something unexpected happened.
I started paying attention to what my body was telling me.
What I discovered surprised me. Even though I felt calm on the outside, my body was spending much of the day in a high stress state. It made me stop and ask a question I hadn’t considered before:
How many of us feel “fine” while quietly carrying more stress than we were ever designed to?
The Stress We Don’t Even Notice
One of the hardest things about stress is that it doesn’t always announce itself.
Sometimes it looks like snapping at your kids over something small. Sometimes it feels like lying awake at night thinking about tomorrow’s to do list. Other times, it simply becomes your normal.
As parents, we slowly add more to our plates.
A new baby.
A new job.
A move.
A ministry commitment.
A growing business.
Aging parents.
Little by little, life becomes fuller until we’re carrying so much that we forget what it feels like to truly rest.
The scary part is that we often don’t realize it’s happening because the pressure builds gradually.
Looking Peaceful Isn’t the Same as Being at Peace
Recently, an image came to mind that perfectly described how I often feel.
A swan.
Above the water, a swan looks calm, graceful, and completely at ease.
But underneath the surface, its feet are moving nonstop.
I realized that’s been me for much of my life.
I’ve become good at holding everything together. As the oldest child growing up and now as a mom, I don’t want my stress to spill over onto the people I love. So instead of expressing it, I tend to carry it quietly.
The problem is, hiding stress doesn’t make it disappear.
It simply moves beneath the surface.
And eventually, if we never deal with it, it builds.
God Never Asked Us to Carry Everything
One verse kept coming back to my mind:
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
I realized I wasn’t actually casting my anxieties on the Lord.
I was holding onto them.
Somewhere along the way, I had started believing it was my job to keep everything moving, solve every problem, finish every task, and make sure everyone was okay.
But many of those burdens were never mine to carry in the first place.
There is such freedom in remembering that we don’t have to be the Savior of our homes.
Jesus already is.
Rest Isn’t Always Restorative
One of the biggest lessons we’ve been learning is that there’s a difference between relaxing and restoring.
Relaxing simply stops the stress for a moment.
Restoration actually helps your body recover from it.
It’s possible to spend an hour scrolling your phone or watching television and still feel completely drained afterward.
We’ve all experienced it.
You sit down hoping to recharge, but when you get back up, you don’t feel refreshed.
You just paused for a little while.
True restoration goes deeper.
It’s the kind of rest that settles your heart, quiets your mind, and reminds you that God is still in control.
The Rhythms That Are Changing Everything
As I became more aware of the stress I was carrying, I started asking a different question.
What actually helps me move from stress into restoration?
For me, it starts with quiet mornings.
Before I look at my phone.
Before I open my planner.
Before I begin solving everyone else’s problems.
Just time with God.
Reading Scripture.
Journaling.
Praying.
Receiving His peace before trying to pour it into my family.
I’ve also noticed how restorative it is to go for a walk, spend time outside, paint simply for the joy of creating, or sit with a good book and a cup of tea.
None of these things are complicated.
But they are intentional.
And that’s the difference.
Rest doesn’t usually happen by accident.
We choose it.
One Small Step This Week
If you’re feeling constantly “on,” here’s our encouragement.
Don’t try to overhaul your entire life this week.
Instead, choose one small restorative rhythm.
Maybe it’s ten quiet minutes with your Bible before the kids wake up.
Maybe it’s leaving your phone in another room while you drink your coffee.
Maybe it’s taking a walk after dinner.
Or pulling out those watercolor paints that have been sitting in the closet.
Small rhythms practiced consistently have a way of changing the atmosphere of our hearts and our homes.
You don’t have to earn rest.
It’s a gift from God.
And perhaps today is an invitation to stop carrying what you were never meant to hold.
