Ep 34 | How to Build a Morning Rhythm That Keeps You Rooted in Chaos (A Husband & Dad’s Perspective)
Maybe your mornings start before you’re ready.
The alarm goes off, and before your feet even hit the floor, your mind is already running. What needs to get done? Who needs you? What did you forget yesterday? What might go wrong today?
It’s easy to start the day reacting to everything around you instead of being rooted in what matters most.
But what if your morning doesn’t need to be more productive? What if it simply needs to help you begin the day with Jesus?
The goal isn’t to win the morning
For more than 10 years, Christian has had some version of a morning rhythm.
It isn’t complicated. It isn’t perfectly quiet. And it certainly isn’t the kind of morning routine that requires a color-coded schedule and an hour of uninterrupted time.
It’s simply a few consistent practices that help him slow down, connect with Jesus, and pay attention to what is happening inside of him before the rest of the day begins.
That has become especially meaningful during hard seasons.
When Darla was admitted to the hospital with a serious infection, Christian found himself living in circumstances he couldn’t control. But the morning rhythm he had practiced for years didn’t suddenly become irrelevant.
If anything, it became more important.
A faithful rhythm gives you somewhere to bring what you’re carrying.
Make space to notice what’s really going on
One of the simplest parts of Christian’s morning is also one of the easiest to skip: pausing.
Before immediately filling the quiet with noise, he takes a moment to put his phone down and notice what he is feeling.
Am I anxious? What am I carrying? Is there something I’m worried about? Is there something I need to bring to God?
Sometimes we want to jump straight into prayer without first being honest about what is actually happening in our hearts.
But you can’t bring something to God that you’re unwilling to acknowledge.
That pause creates space to be honest with God instead of simply pushing through the day.
Your morning rhythm can be simple
Christian’s morning usually includes coffee, a quick check on his beloved Red Sox, a moment of silence, journaling, prayer, and Scripture.
But the point isn’t to copy his routine.
Your morning rhythm might look completely different.
Maybe it’s ten quiet minutes before the kids wake up. Maybe it’s coffee and a Psalm at the kitchen table. Maybe you pray while you get ready for the day. Maybe you write down a few things you’re grateful for or spend a few minutes processing what’s been weighing on you.
The important question isn’t, “What is the perfect Christian morning routine?”
It’s, “What helps me begin my day rooted instead of reactive?”
Start with three things
If you don’t have a morning rhythm right now, don’t try to build a complicated one overnight.
Start small.
Choose three things:
Prayer. Take a few minutes to talk with God about the day ahead.
Scripture. Spend time in God’s Word, even if it’s only a few verses.
Pause. Give yourself a moment to be still and notice what you’re carrying.
Then practice those three things for a week.
You don’t have to do them perfectly. You don’t have to wake up at 5 a.m. You don’t have to recreate someone else’s routine.
You just need a rhythm you can return to.
Let consistency matter more than novelty
One thing Christian has learned over the years is that consistency matters more than constantly finding something new.
He has used the same Bible reading plan for years. Not because it’s the only good plan, but because he knows it works for him and he keeps returning to it.
There is something powerful about doing simple things faithfully.
The goal of a morning rhythm isn’t to have an impressive morning. It’s to build a rhythm that helps you become the person your family needs you to be.
And some mornings will be messy.
Some mornings the kids will wake up early. Some mornings you’ll be traveling. Some mornings life will completely interrupt your plans.
That doesn’t mean the rhythm has failed.
It means you get to return to it again tomorrow.
You don’t need the perfect morning
A rooted life isn’t built in one perfect morning.
It’s built through small, faithful choices repeated over time.
So tomorrow morning, before you reach for your phone or start running through your to-do list, take ten minutes and ask yourself:
What would help me begin today rooted instead of reactive?
Maybe the answer is prayer. Maybe it’s Scripture. Maybe it’s simply sitting quietly with your coffee and acknowledging what you’re carrying.
Start there.
You don’t need the perfect morning rhythm.
You need a faithful rhythm.

Maybe your mornings feel rushed before the day has even begun. You wake up already thinking about what needs to get done, who needs you, and everything that could go wrong—and before you know it, you’re reacting instead of living from a place of peace.
But what if the goal of your morning isn’t to have the perfect routine, accomplish a long list, or “win the morning”? What if it’s simply to begin the day rooted?
Christian has practiced a simple morning rhythm for more than 10 years, and it has become one of the ways he consistently makes space for Jesus, Scripture, prayer, and the things he’s carrying. And right now, with Darla in the hospital, he’s seeing again why that rhythm matters—not because it makes life easier, but because it gives him somewhere to bring what he’s carrying.
You don’t need to copy someone else’s morning routine. You need a faithful rhythm that helps you begin your own day rooted rather than reactive.
You’ll hear:
- Why Christian believes a simple morning rhythm can change the way you enter your day
- The three elements he considers essential: prayer, Scripture, and a moment to pause
- How journaling creates space to acknowledge what you’re carrying instead of simply pushing through it
- What Christian learned about faith and consistency by watching his dad
- How to build a morning rhythm that fits your life—and actually stick with it
If your mornings have felt rushed, reactive, or disconnected from what matters most, press play and consider what a faithful morning rhythm could look like for you.
