Ep 7 | The Simple Meal Planning Rhythm That Changed Our Evenings
Every day around 5 p.m., the same question shows up.
“What’s for dinner?”
Maybe you’ve stood in front of the refrigerator hoping inspiration would magically appear. Maybe you forgot to thaw the chicken. Maybe everyone is hungry, you’re tired from a long day, and ordering pizza feels like the only realistic option.
If you’ve ever ended the day feeling like dinner was harder than it should have been, you’re not alone.
For years, that was us.
The funny thing is, dinner wasn’t stressful because we didn’t know how to cook. It was stressful because we were making one of the biggest decisions of the day when we had the least amount of energy left to give.
Everything changed when we made one simple shift.
We stopped deciding what to eat at 5 p.m.
Instead, we started deciding earlier in the week.
Meal Planning Is About More Than Food
When people hear “meal planning,” they often picture complicated spreadsheets, color-coded calendars, or spending an entire Sunday preparing dozens of freezer meals.
That’s not what we’re talking about.
Meal planning isn’t about being organized for the sake of organization. It’s about creating a rhythm that protects your evenings.
When you already know what’s for dinner, something changes.
You aren’t scrambling through the pantry. You’re not making another decision after making hundreds of them all day long. Instead, you can spend that energy talking with your kids, cooking together, or simply enjoying the meal that’s already been planned.
It may seem like a small thing, but those small rhythms shape the atmosphere of a home.
Our Meal Planning System Is Surprisingly Simple
People often assume there must be some secret.
There isn’t.
Every week, we set aside about 30 minutes to choose our meals. Then we spend another 30 minutes ordering groceries online. Once the groceries are picked up, everything we need is already in the house.
That’s it.
No complicated system.
No fancy templates.
Just a simple rhythm we repeat week after week.
We’ve found that meal planning has far more to do with consistency than creativity.
In fact, one of the greatest gifts we’ve given ourselves is permission to repeat meals.
Our family has favorite recipes that everyone enjoys. Instead of trying to invent something brand new every week, we come back to those trusted meals again and again.
Less creativity often leads to more peace.
The Decision That Changed Everything
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is this:
You don’t need to give daily energy to decisions that could have been made earlier in the week.
Think about how much energy you already spend every day.
You pour into your children.
You show up at work.
You solve problems.
You answer questions.
By the time dinner rolls around, your mental battery is almost empty.
Meal planning simply moves one important decision to a time when you actually have the capacity to think clearly.
It’s amazing how such a small change can make evenings feel completely different.
Why This Rhythm Matters So Much
Family dinner has always been important to us.
Both of us grew up sitting around the table with our families, and we wanted that same gift for our children.
Not because every dinner is perfect.
Far from it.
Some nights someone spills milk. Someone doesn’t like the vegetables. Someone tells an incredibly long story.
That’s family life.
But we’ve learned that when dinner isn’t rushed or chaotic, it becomes one of the best places to connect.
Some of our favorite conversations happen around the table.
The meal is important.
But what happens during the meal matters even more.
Build Rhythms Before You Need Them
This rhythm became even more meaningful during one of the hardest seasons of our lives.
When our daughter Darla spent months in the hospital, our normal routines were turned upside down. Kayla was away caring for her, while Christian stayed home with the other kids.
Life looked nothing like we expected.
But our meal planning rhythm didn’t disappear.
Because we already had a simple system in place, it kept serving our family even during that difficult season. We adjusted meals, simplified recipes, and repeated favorites more often, but we didn’t have to reinvent everything while walking through hardship.
That’s one of the reasons we’re so passionate about building healthy rhythms.
The rhythms you build during peaceful seasons often become the ones that carry you through difficult ones.
Start Smaller Than You Think
If you’ve never meal planned before, don’t feel like you need to plan every breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner this week.
Start with two or three dinners.
Write them down.
Order the groceries.
Stick with your plan as best you can.
That’s enough.
Simple, consistent steps almost always beat complicated systems that only last a week.
Meal planning isn’t about perfection.
It’s about creating a rhythm that supports your family instead of reacting to chaos every evening.
If you’re ready to take that first step, we’d love to help.
