Ep. 35 | Why Your Family Rhythms Aren’t Working Anymore
Have you ever had a season where your family isn’t falling apart, but somehow everything feels harder than it should?
You’re doing the things that used to work. You have routines. You have a family calendar. You’ve worked hard to build rhythms that bring order and peace to your home. And yet, suddenly, those same rhythms feel exhausting instead of helpful.
That’s where we found ourselves this fall.
Our family rhythms had been built slowly over more than a decade. They had served us well. But our family had changed. We were trying to fit the rhythms that worked for an old season into a very different one—and it felt like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
Maybe you’ve been there, too.
Sometimes the problem isn’t your rhythm. It’s your season.
A new school year brought a lot of changes for our family. We added two more kids to our hybrid school schedule, we were adjusting to life with seven children, Christian began working from home, and our kids’ activities had grown.
None of these things were bad. In fact, many of them were things we were thankful for.
But when you add one good thing here and another good thing there, eventually you have to stop and ask: Does our current life still have room for everything we say matters?
That question has become one of the most important questions we ask when we plan our family life.
We make space for the things we care about. We do it in our homes, so why wouldn’t we do it with our time?
If family meals matter, we make space for them. If time with God matters, we make space for it. If marriage, rest, learning, adventure, serving, or time with our children matter, those things need somewhere to live on our calendar.
Otherwise, the urgent things will happily take over the space.
Start by deciding what actually matters
When we sit down to rework our family rhythms, we don’t begin by asking, “How can we fit everything in?”
That question will make you crazy.
Instead, we start by asking, “What does our family actually need in this season?”
For us, that means making three simple lists:
Need: The rhythms that help our family function. Think meals, sleep, laundry, school, work, exercise, family admin, Sabbath, and discipleship.
Nice: Things that would bring joy or connection but aren’t essential every week. Maybe that’s a family game night, creative time, hosting friends, or time for a hobby.
New: Things you’ve been wanting to make room for in this season. Maybe it’s one-on-one time with your kids, a monthly family adventure, or a new spiritual practice.
Don’t worry too much about putting everything in the “right” category. The point isn’t perfection. The point is getting the things out of your head and onto paper so you can actually see them.
Your family rhythms should create freedom, not more work
This is where we think family rhythms get misunderstood.
A rhythm can sound restrictive. Like one more rule. One more thing you have to keep up with.
But healthy family rhythms should actually create more freedom.
When you know when meals happen, when laundry gets done, when you work, when you rest, and when your family connects, you don’t have to make those decisions over and over again.
And here’s the surprising part: rhythms also help when life goes sideways.
Just this week, our daughter became unexpectedly sick and was admitted to the hospital. Because we knew our normal rhythms, we could quickly see what needed to move and what could keep going. Music lessons could be rescheduled. One of us could step away while the other handled homeschooling, dinner, or laundry.
The rhythm didn’t make the hard thing disappear.
It gave us a framework for moving through it.
Make room for what matters most
You don’t need a perfect family schedule.
You need a plan that reflects the family you’re trying to build.
That means looking honestly at your calendar and asking: Are we making space for the things we care about, or are things simply taking up space?
Start small. Sit down with your spouse. Write down the rhythms your family needs, the things that would be nice, and the things you’d love to make room for in this season.
Then look at your week with fresh eyes.
Your rhythms are not meant to become your master. They are there to serve your family.
And when the season changes, you’re allowed to change them, too.
If your family has been feeling stretched, scattered, or like your old routines just don’t fit anymore, we hope you’ll listen to this episode of The Rooted Family Podcast. We’re walking through this process in real time—and in Part 2, we’ll take the next step of actually building our ideal week together.

The Rooted Family is a podcast for Christian millennial parents who are tired of the rushed, chaotic pace of modern family life—and deeply desire something different.
Hosted by Christian and Kayla Cornish, parents of seven and founders of Legacy Roots Co., this show is all about building a countercultural family life rooted in faith, intentional rhythms, and Christ-centered formation. We believe following Jesus in today’s world means slowing down, living on purpose, and creating a home shaped by values—not culture’s noise.
Each episode offers practical, step-by-step tools to help your family move from busy and overwhelmed to peaceful and rhythmic. We talk about family systems, daily routines, spiritual disciplines, marriage, parenting, big faith, and everyday Christian formation—always with real-life application for the modern family.
You’ll learn how to:
- Create simple rhythms and routines that actually work
- Build systems that support faith, peace, and connection at home
- Go deeper spiritually as parents—and help your kids grow in their own faith
- Live intentionally and pass on a meaningful legacy
- Choose slow living and purpose in a fast-paced world

Have you ever had a season where your family isn’t falling apart, but the rhythms that used to bring peace just aren’t working anymore? Maybe the calendar is fuller, your kids’ needs have changed, work looks different, or you’re simply realizing that the routines you built for an old season don’t quite fit the life you’re living now.
We’ve found ourselves in exactly that place. And instead of trying to squeeze our growing family back into rhythms that no longer fit, we’re stepping back and asking a better question: Are we actually making space for the things we care about—or are things just taking up space?
In this honest, behind-the-scenes conversation, we’re working through the first part of our own family rhythm reset—and inviting you to do the same with your spouse. You’ll walk away with a simple way to identify what your family truly needs, what would simply be nice, and what you may want to make room for in this new season.
You’ll hear:
- Why family rhythms sometimes stop working—and why that doesn’t mean you’ve failed
- How to identify the rhythms your family actually needs right now
- The difference between a rhythm, a scheduled activity, and a simple family commitment
- How your family’s values can help you decide what deserves space on your calendar
- Why healthy rhythms can actually create more freedom, not less
This is Part 1 of our family rhythm reset. Grab a pencil, your calendar, and your spouse, and press play as we work through the first steps together.
