Ep. 26 | Sabbath Begins Before the Sabbath: The Simple Rhythm That Changed the Way We Rest
Have you ever looked forward to Sabbath all week… only to reach the end of it feeling like you never actually rested?
Maybe your mind stayed on the emails you didn’t answer. Maybe the laundry was piled high, the sink was full of dishes, or you forgot to buy groceries before the weekend. You wanted to slow down, but instead you spent the day thinking about everything you still needed to do.
If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone.
For years, we believed the hardest part of Sabbath was simply making time for it. But after practicing Sabbath as a family for more than a decade, we’ve discovered something that completely changed the way we experience God’s gift of rest.
Sabbath begins long before the Sabbath begins.
The Problem Isn’t Always the Sabbath
We’ve heard from so many families who tried practicing Sabbath once or twice and walked away discouraged.
“It just didn’t work for us.”
Honestly, we’ve been there too.
The reality is that most of us enter Sabbath carrying the weight of the entire week. We bring unfinished work, household chores, mental to-do lists, and constant distractions into a day that was designed for peace.
Then we wonder why we don’t feel rested.
We’ve realized that the problem often isn’t the Sabbath itself.
It’s that we never prepared our hearts to stop.
Preparation Isn’t About Perfection
This is where it’s easy to misunderstand Sabbath preparation.
We’re not talking about having a spotless house or checking every item off your to-do list before you can rest.
There will always be another email.
Another room to clean.
Another load of laundry.
Sabbath isn’t something you earn once everything is finished.
Instead, preparation is about removing the biggest distractions so your heart is free to receive the gift God has already given.
That’s a very different mindset.
Preparation Is an Act of Faith
One of the things we love about Scripture is that preparation has always been part of Sabbath.
God instructed His people to gather a double portion of manna before the Sabbath. Meals were prepared ahead of time. Work was completed before the day of rest began.
Preparation wasn’t separate from Sabbath.
It was part of honoring it.
Every time we intentionally prepare for Sabbath, we’re saying,
“God, I trust You enough to stop.”
That’s an act of faith.
What Sabbath Prep Looks Like in Our Home
Our Sabbath prep rhythm has changed over the years, but the goal has always stayed the same: create space to delight in God and enjoy one another.
For our family, that usually starts by finishing work well.
Instead of simply closing the laptop when the clock runs out, we take a few minutes to finish what needs to be finished, write down Monday’s priorities, and intentionally let work go. That simple habit keeps unfinished projects from following us into the weekend.
We also spend a little time resetting our home.
Not deep cleaning.
Not trying to impress anyone.
Just picking up the clutter, washing the dishes, and creating a peaceful space where we can breathe.
With seven kids, our house isn’t perfect—and it never will be. But we’ve learned that a little preparation goes a long way.
Meals are another important part of our rhythm.
Sometimes it’s soup we made earlier in the week. Sometimes it’s something simple on the grill or leftovers. The goal isn’t an elaborate dinner. It’s removing the stress of wondering what everyone is going to eat.
We also put work away.
Literally.
Laptops close.
Planners get put away.
Phones are silenced.
For us, those physical actions help our hearts recognize that the workweek has ended.
Find Your Biggest Distraction
One of the best things we’ve learned is that every family is different.
Maybe a messy kitchen doesn’t bother you at all.
Maybe it’s unfinished work.
Maybe it’s grocery shopping.
Maybe it’s the constant notifications on your phone.
Instead of trying to prepare everything, ask yourself one simple question:
What is the one thing that most often steals my peace on the Sabbath?
Start there.
Remove that one obstacle before Sabbath begins.
Small rhythms practiced consistently become lasting rhythms.
Rest Is Worth Preparing For
Think about the things you look forward to most.
A vacation.
Christmas morning.
A birthday celebration.
We naturally prepare for the things we value.
Preparation creates anticipation.
In many ways, Sabbath is no different.
When we prepare for it, we’re reminding our hearts that this day matters. We’re creating space to stop striving, delight in God’s goodness, and enjoy the people He’s entrusted to us.
If you’re just beginning your Sabbath journey, don’t feel like you have to copy someone else’s rhythm.
Start small.
Take one simple step this week.
Then let that small step become a rhythm over time.
